Thanh Hoa: Carbon Emission Reduction for Lam Son Sugarcane Raw Material Area

On December 19, 2024, Lasuco, Idemitsu Kosan, and Sagri signed a contract for the Carbon Emission Reduction Project for Lam Son’s sugarcane area. This is Vietnam’s first carbon reduction project in the sugarcane sector, using the “Improved Agricultural Land Management” methodology (VM0042).

The project employs regenerative agriculture and satellite analysis technology to monitor and reduce greenhouse gases, such as Nitrous Oxide (N₂O), and increase soil carbon storage.

Project Phases:
Pilot Phase (2025):
– Conducted on 500 hectares of farmland contracted by Lasuco.
– Implements optimized fertilizer usage to reduce chemical emissions and enhance soil carbon storage.

Commercial Phase (2026):
– Expands to 8,000 hectares if the pilot successfully reduces emissions.
– Carbon credits will be registered under VM0042 by Verra, the world’s largest carbon credit certification organization.

Alignment with National Goals:
The project supports Vietnam’s net-zero emissions goal by 2050, particularly in agriculture, and serves as a model for similar projects across the country.

Remarks from Leaders:
Le Duc Giang, Vice Chairman of Thanh Hoa, highlighted the province’s 9,150 km² of agricultural land and the potential of bamboo for future carbon projects. He also encouraged the expansion of the initiative to other crops and regions.

Signing Ceremony:
The ceremony concluded with the signing of the contract between Lasuco, Idemitsu, and Sagri, witnessed by leaders from Thanh Hoa’s government, officially launching the project.
